Workshop Description:

This workshop provides students with proven and practical knowledge that professional and business writers have used to craft crisp, clear, and concise correspondence. From the opening line to the closing remarks, students will learn strategies to make their memos more appealing to memo readers.

Agenda:

  • Opening activity: Using Polleverywhere, the Responder will gauge background knowledge and motivation for memo writing.
  • Provide background information: What are memos and why memo writing matters.
  • Review writing foundations: How to determine purpose, how to analyze an audience, and how to understand style.
  • Discuss memo format: Memo titles, headings, body paragraphs, and closing remarks
  • Closing activity: Using Polleverywhere, the Responder will encourage the students to practice making clear, concise, and active sentences.

Learning Objectives:

Students should be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics of effective memos
  • Describe the contents and uses of memos
  • Define proper formats for writing memos
  • Write clear, concise sentences

Special Requirements: Computer, projector, and mobile devices

Location: The Writers' Center or classroom

Duration: 60-180 minutes
