Beginning the Research Paper

Preparing to Write Academically

Overview:
During this workshop, students will be introduced to the purpose and qualities of a research paper. They will also practice the pre-stage writing procedures: inquiry, research, brainstorming, developing a thesis statement, and outlining. This workshop functions well as a precursor to the literature review, revision, and citation workshops. It is ideal for any research-oriented curriculum. We recommend that this workshop is followed up by at least one library research instructional session in which the students learn to locate sources and spend time researching and developing a topic assisted by a librarian.

Learning Objectives: For students to understand the value of inquiry and planning in the academic research process and to gain practical tools for setting the stage to write their research paper.

Special Requirements: Computer with projector and web access

Location: The Writers' Center or classroom

Duration: 50 minutes
