Using Skype for Online Writers' Center Consultations

Note: This help page explains how to use Skype for online Writers' Center consultations, which are available to out-of-town EWU students. Skype is a free online calling service that allows you to use voice and video conferencing. Skype can be downloaded for free from Skype.com. This help page assumes that you have headphones, a microphone and a webcam.

Preparing for a Skype Conference Call

1. Attach and install your webcam.

Note: Some webcams will not install correctly unless the webcam is hooked up to the computer prior to installing the software.

2. Go to Skype.com and download the free software.

3. Double click the installation file and follow the prompts to install.

4. Open Skype by double clicking the desktop icon.

5. Follow the prompts to create a Skype username. If you already have an account, click Log In.

6. Test your microphone and audio by clicking the icon above Check Your Sound Works and follow the prompts.

7. Type ewuwriterscenter in the search bar and add as contact.

Scheduling and Receiving a Video Call (PC Version)

You must first make an appointment at the Writers' Center. Be sure to answer Yes when asked Is this a Skype appointment? and include the following statement in the textbox beside the question What would you like to work on today?: "This is an online session. My Skype username is _________." 

1. On the day of your appointment, log in to Skype five to ten minutes prior to your session and make sure you have your webcam, headphones, and microphone all connected. Open Skype by double clicking the desktop icon and enter your login information.

2. A Writers' Center responder will contact you to begin the session. A dialogue box should appear informing you that ewuwriterscenter is calling you. Click Answer With Video to begin a video call. The video will take a moment to load. If your web cam is working, you should also see a small video of yourself in the bottom left corner.

3. Begin your session. When the appointment ends, the responder will end the call.

Scheduling and Receiving a Video Call (Mac Version)

You must first make an appointment at the Writers' Center. Be sure to answer Yes when asked Is this a Skype appointment? and include the following statement in the textbox beside the question What would you like to work on today?: "This is an online session. My Skype username is _________."

1. On the day of your appointment, log in to Skype five to ten minutes prior to your session and make sure you have your webcam, headphones, and microphone all connected. Open Skype by double clicking the desktop icon and enter your login information.

2. A Writers' Center responder will contact you to begin the session. A dialogue box should appear informing you that ewuwriterscenter is calling you. Click Answer.

3. A second dialogue box should appear that says ewuwriterscenter would like to start a video call. Click Accept.

4. The incoming video from the Writers' Center will take a moment to load, but you will need to start your video feed manually. Click the video button in the bottom left corner.

5. Begin your session. When the appointment ends, the responder will end the call.
