Biography

Greetings writers! My name is Joanna Semler and I have been a Responder at the Writers' Center for about five years. I have an MA in English-Literature from the University of Colorado, Boulder. I grew up in Spokane, however, and plan to make Washington my permanent home. I enjoy my work at the Writers' Center a great deal! Eastern studetns are delightful to work with because they bring a wide range of perspectives and experiences to their writing; I feel privileged to be able to share in such intelligent expressions of points of view. Although it may appear that my job is to guide writers, the truth is that the writers I work with guide me. Students continually challenge my thinking about everything from questions about what constitutes effective, powerful writing to contemporary social and political issues. I haven't worked a day yet that I didn't learn something new. Outside of my work at the Writers' Center, I enjoy teaching, reading, gardening, home improvement, and just generally hanging out with my husband and son, family, and friends.
