Please be aware there have been possible sightings in the EWU/Cheney community of a convicted sex offender Eric E. Hartwell, 52 years of age, 200-230 lbs, 6'2", blue eyes, short blond hair, tattoo on right hand, may wear glasses. Hartwell is a registered sex offender, has violent tendencies, and wanted on federal warrants. See attached photo.

Please be aware of your surroundings, do not approach Harwell. If you see Hartwell, call 911 immediately.

2/3/14 Timely Warning-

  The investigation continues into stabbing of an EWU student that occurred early Sunday morning in the area of 6th and H street in Cheney. Police are requesting the communities help in identifying the person or persons involved in this assault. Anyone who may have been in the vicinity of 4th and I to 6th and H street  at 0230am and observed anyone in the area please contact Cheney PD at 535-9233 or EWUPD at 359-6310. 2013 CLERY Training Event 8/21/13

The EWU Police Department is holding its Annual Active Shooter Training Exercise Wednesday, August 21st, from 12:00pm-8:00pm. This is a regional, multi-agency event hosting city, state, and county police and fire departments. The event will be held in the City of Cheney at Cheney Middle School with the command center located at the EWU Police Department on campus. Please note this is a training exercise and there will be increased police and fire activities between 12:00pm-8:00pm on this date.

Cheney Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred at the Cheney McDonalds on 1st Street last night, 5/21/13, at approximately 11:12PM. The suspect was described as a white male, early 20s, 5'8"-5'10", 140lbs-170lbs, and clean shaven. Suspect was wearing a black wig with black bandana, plaid shirt, light blue jeans with paint or bleach stains, and black shoes. The suspect, armed with a black handgun, fled the scene south bound on foot. Spokane Police Department K-9 unit tracked suspect to the 2400 block of University Lane, where it is believed the suspect may have left the area in a vehicle, description of vehicle unknown. A female EWU student was grabbed from behind while jogging through the alley behind Brewster Hall between 9:10PM-9:30PM last night 5/12/13. Suspect is described as a 5'7"-5'8" male, race unknown, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and possible red shorts or shoes carrying a white grocery bag. Anyone having information, please contact Cheney Police Department at 509-535-9233.

The EWU Police Department wants to remind our students and community to be aware of your surroundings and to travel in groups after dark.

University Police are investigating a robbery, reported 10/17/12, that occurred on 10/2/12 on the EWU Cheney main campus in the parking lot of Streeter Hall on N. 10th Street between 12:00AM-1:00AM.

The victim reports that there were two suspects: one Caucasian male, one Black male and both approximately 6'3'' tall and 220lbs. One was wearing a black sweatshirt and one was wearing a red sweatshirt. The two suspects assaulted and robbed the victim, no weapons were used.

As a safety reminder, please remember to be aware of your surroundings and use the buddy system. Be aware, an older white male driving a White Chevy Lumina WA. License 159VZV approached a student leaving the Riverpoint Campus late at night after hours in a suspicious manner. Be aware of your surroundings and never walk alone at night. If you see this vehicle on campus or in the area, please contact the Riverpoint Campus Security at 509.358.7995, EWU Police department at 509.535.9233, or the EWU Police Tip Line at 509.359.4286. There have been a number of theft's in the URC at the lockers starting Monday (5/14/12) through today (5/16/12). The suspect is a white male, approximately 18-20 years old, he is approximately 5'8"-5'10", about 140 lbs, he wears baggy pants, a t-shirt, and a baseball hat. Eagle Alert 1/9/12

Follow-up to the timely warning issued regarding a sexual assault on 12/31/11. On 12/31/11 at approximately 1920 hours, a white male, 5'6"-5'7', 160 lbs, wearing a black "Carhart" style jacket, dark gray hoodie, black jean type pants, black boots and a white with black print bandana over the lower portion of his face, burglarized an occupied home in Cheney at knife point.  The suspect had a light brown mustache, spoke with a gravelly voice and smelled like cigarettes. Location was 200 Block of W 2nd St. Anyone who may have observed suspicious persons or activity in the area of 200 W. 2nd Street, is encouraged to call the EWU Police Department directly at 509.359.6310 during normal business hours, EWU Police Dispatch at 509.535.9233 after hours, or the EWU Police Tip Line at 509.359.4286. Police are investigating a sexual assault that occurred in the 200 block of W. 2nd Street in Cheney this evening. Suspect is described as a white male, medium build, approximately 5'6" to 5'7". Suspect was wearing dark clothing and a black and white bandanna covering his face, he was armed with a fixed blade knife. Anyone having information about this assault please call Cheney PD at 509.535.9233 or dial 911.

Campus police are investigating three separate car prowls in Parking Lot 13, (upper level on N. 10th St.) on EWU Cheney main campus.  Windows are being broken, in order to gain access to valuables items inside of cars. Cheney Police Department is also investigating several car prowls that occurred in the same general area.

We would like to remind students parking cars anywhere on campus or on the city streets, to not leave valuable items in view or in cars, as the thieves are targeting these cars. Campus police are investigating an assault that occurred on the EWU Cheney main campus on November 2, 2011 at approximately 7:50PM, in the area of the University Recreation Center (URC) and Louise Anderson Hall (LA Hall).

The suspect is a black male in his early to mid twenties, approximate height of 6"2", medium build, with a goatee.  He was wearing a dark colored or black sweatpants and a hooded sweat shirt.  The suspect grabbed a female student and attempted to take her into a secluded area. University Police are looking into a potential stalking case on the EWU Cheney main campus.

A white male in his mid twenties, approximately 5'9" tall, medium build, short brown hair, clean shaven has been seen following a female student from the area of Kingston and Senior Hall. This individual is following female students from this area to the PUB, and has been seen loitering near the STA bus stop at the PUB.  This individual does not appear to be a student.

In the past week we have had relatives of three EWU students contacted via phone or email requesting money to be wired to locations in Canada and Spain.  This is a SCAM.  Callers are stating that the students have been arrested and need bail money, or have been robbed and need money to travel safely back home.  Requests are varying between $1,000 and $10,000. Do not send money or give any personal information to these individuals. Upon requesting verification of information only the family member would know, these scammers will usually hang up.  If you have caller ID available, please contact the EWU Police Department at 509.359.6300 or 509.535.9233 with the information.

Be alert to potential scams involving cashing checks for other people. The EWU Police Department has information regarding students looking for jobs that are being targeted in these scams. The students are being contacted by email or other electronic means. If you have been asked to cash checks into your bank accounts in order to give money to another party, or if you feel uneasy about a similar incident, please contact the EWU Police Department at 509-535-9233 (Dispatch) or 509-359-6300.

Riverpoint

CHENEY, Wash. - Eastern Washington University Police would like to relay the following timely security alert, in light of a police impersonation incident near our EWU Spokane campus at Riverpoint.

Within the last week, a report was received by Gonzaga security that on Tuesday, October 5, at about 3:15 p.m., a student was pulled over by a tan Cadillac Escalade at Cincinnati and Desmet. The vehicle was reported to have red and blue flashing lights across the top of the windshield, but no other police markings. The student stated that the vehicle had a regular Washington plate, but did not get the license number.

The subject driving the vehicle was described as a white male in his early 40's, 5'11", of medium build with blonde buzz cut hair. The subject was wearing a dark blue two-piece uniform. The suspect stated he had pulled over the student because she failed to yield to pedestrians. The subject asked for identification and also had the student open her trunk, glove compartment and console before leaving. The student reported the incident on Tuesday to Spokane Police, who are investigating further.

Spokane Police recommend that you try to pull over in a safe and visible location and if you are not certain that an individual is a police officer, call 911 to verify their identity or request that the person produce identification before exiting your vehicle.

As always, report suspicious persons and activities immediately by calling 911.
