Spotting Possible Media Issues

There are some events that occur on campus which are likely to draw the attention of the news media. When these occur, it is helpful to contact the media relations specialist, who can be of assistance in handling media questions during and after the event.

Learning to spot the "media" potential can be tricky.

As a general rule, unfortunately, such stories are almost always negative. A suicide. A reported rape. A high-profile felony. These involve University Police, and the director of public safety contacts the media relations specialist.

However, there may be other instances. Sometimes, the media will cover an event or lecture that might tie into a hot topic in the regional or national news. If it even occurs to you that an event or activity may draw the attention of the news media, please contact the media relations specialist.
