General Education Assessment

General Education Assessment Process

The General Education Coordinating Committee (GECC) assesses EWU's General Education courses and Capstones on a 3-year cycle.

  • Year 1 (2010-2011) - University Competencies/Proficiencies: Mathematics, English Composition, Computer Literacy
  • Year 2 (2008-2009, 2011-2012) - Core Areas: Natural Science, Social Science, Arts & Humanities
  • Year 3 (2009-2010, 2012-2013) - Graduation Requirements: Cultural & Gender Diversity, International Studies, Capstone

GECC selects one outcome for each General Education area for the instructors to assess. The 3-step assessment process involves:

  1. Describing the instrument used to assess the outcome
  2. Stating the results of the assessment
  3. Discussing the interpretation of the results to determine what changes, if any, ought to be made to the class to improve student learning.

GECC reviews the assessments and advises instructors concerning appropriate strategies and instruments. The results of the assessments are summarized and reported to the Undergraduate Affairs Council (UAC) and the Advisory Committee on Academic Assessment (ACAA).
