When do I get paid?

Time worked between the first and the 15th of the month is paid on the 25th of that same month. Time worked between the 16th and the end of the month is paid on the 10th of the following month. If a payday falls on a Saturday, payday will be on the preceding Friday; if a payday falls on Sunday, payday will be on the following Monday.

When does the workweek start?

The workweek starts at 12:01 a.m. on Monday and ends on Sunday at midnight.

When are new recruitments posted?

New recruitments are posted throughout the week.  The online applicant portal is updated on a regular basis and can be accessed at jobs.hr.ewu.edu.  A jobs listserv is available for those who would like to be notified as jobs are posted.  http://listserv.ewu.edu/mailman/listinfo/ewu_employment_opportunities

How do I find what an exempt job pays?

You may print an Adobe Acrobat file of exempt classifications and salary ranges by selecting the appropriate link under Exempt Employment.

How do I request a management review of a classification?

You can request a management review of a classification based on the Management Reclassification Procedure. The form for this procedure may be found here.

How do I compensate my employee for additional duties?

Employees can be compensated for additional duties based on Eastern Washington University Policy 401-02 - Additional or Outside Employment.  Click here for additional information.

When am I eligible to take vacation leave?

Classified employees can use vacation leave after six months of continuous employment. An employee who transfers to Eastern from another state agency and brings a vacation balance with him/her may use that balance during the trial service and/or probationary period. Exempt employees can use vacation leave immediately upon accrual. Exempt employees who transfer from another state agency may also transfer up to 30 days of vacation leave for immediate use at Eastern. All leave must be approved in advance of use.

How much vacation leave do I earn?

Full-time classified employees earn the following during each month they are eligible:
  • 8 hours during the 1st year of continuous state employment;
  • 8 hours, 40 minutes during the 2nd year of continuous state employment;
  • 9 hours, 20 minutes during the 3rd and 4th years of continuous state employment;
  • 10 hours during the 5th through the 9th years of total state employment;
  • 10 hours, 40 minutes during the 10th year of total state employment;
  • 11 hours, 20 minutes during the 11th year of state employment;
  • 12 hours during the 12th year of total state employment;
  • 12 hours, 40 minutes during the 13th year of total state employment;
  • 13 hours, 20 minutes during the 14th year of total state employment;
  • 14 hours during the 15th year of total state employment;
  • and 14 hours, 40 minutes during the 16th and remaining years of total state employment.

Full-time exempt employees earn 14.67 hours of vacation leave each month that they are eligible.

Why did I not earn my vacation leave or sick leave?

Employees who are on a leave of absence without pay for more than 10 days in a month do not earn vacation or sick leave for that month.

When am I eligible to take my personal holiday?

Classified employees can use their personal holiday after four consecutive months of employment. Exempt employees who have a 12 month term of appointment are eligible for a personal holiday and can use it immediately. Personal holidays must be approved in advance of use and must be used within the calendar year earned. Personal holiday balances are updated on January 1 of each year.

How much vacation leave can I accrue before I lose it?

Classified employees may accumulate vacation leave to 30 working days. Leave over the 30 days must be used by the first of the anniversary month. Leave over the 30 working days not used by the first of the anniversary month will automatically be lost. Exempt employees may accrue any vacation leave balance, but are limited to the use of 60 working days in a fiscal year, and can not be cashed out, upon separation, for more than a total of 60 working days (including any vacation leave taken during the fiscal year). All leave must be approved in advance of use.

How much sick leave can I accrue before I lose it?

There is no maximum limit for sick leave accrual.

What are the minimum balances of sick and vacation leave an employee must have before they can donate shared leave?

Your donation of sick leave cannot drop your sick leave balance below 176 hours. In addition, your donation of vacation leave cannot drop your vacation leave balance below 80 hours.

How is compensatory time calculated on a classified employee's time sheet?

When a classified employee works overtime and elects to earn compensatory time, the hours worked (rounded up to the nearest ½ hour) are entered by date on the Comp Time Earned 1.5 rate line of the time sheet.  Do not multiply the hours worked by 1.5.  The multiplication happens during the Payroll processes.  Exempt employees do not round up their overtime as it is paid actual time worked.

How do I report jury duty?

Jury duty is reported by date on the Civil/Jury Leave line on the time sheet.  If you receive any compensation for jury duty, you must return that compensation (minus your mileage and any other miscellaneous expenses) to your departmental budget. The exact amount to be reimbursed to your department should be taken to Student Financial Services, Sutton Hall, second floor.
