Community Advisor FAQ
By being a Community Advisor, I will receive free room and board. How will that affect my financial aid?
The CA position can affect your financial aid or scholarship award. To find out how this affects your specific situation, please contact the Financial Aid office at 509.359.2314.
Am I allowed to hold another position on or off campus?
Students are allowed to work 19 hours per week on campus. Because the CA position maxes out the 19 hours, you may not hold another job on campus. To work off campus you must have permission from your Area Coordinator and direct supervisor. It is rare that we allow CAs to hold other positions due to the time commitment of the CA position.
When is CA Training?
CA training is typically two weeks prior to the start of fall quarter. Specific dates will be given during contract signing in the spring.
If I have prior engagements, can I miss training?
Training is an absolutely crucial part in holding the CA position and preparing for the start of the new year. Training is required in order to hold the position of a CA. If a potential conflict arises, you should let your supervisor know as soon as you become aware.
Can I choose what building I am placed in?
While we do take into account the candidate's preference, we also take into account the needs of the department. When you apply, you are applying for the overall position, not a specific community or building.
Do I have to retake the Leadership Workshop if I have already taken it?
If you have previously taken the Workshop and did not get a position, you do not need to retake it. If you are still interested in a CA position, just contact the selection committee to be notified of interview times and locations.
What if I don’t have the required GPA?
At the time of application, all candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and be a full time student. Students with less than a 2.5 GPA will not be considered.
Should I apply for housing for the next year if I am applying to be a CA?
Each candidate should plan on applying for fall housing without considering the CA position in their plans. If you are planning to live on campus next year, please apply for fall housing. If you would only live on campus if hired as a CA, then you may not wish to go through the fall housing application process. Because we will notify all candidates in May, you will still have time to apply for housing should you get the position.
