Information for students with transfer credits:

Only those courses that are considered college-level, and are from an accredited institution of higher education, are eligible for transfer credit. Information regarding EWU's transfer policy may be found at: Admissions Transferable Credit.  

Transfer courses are evaluated and processed as follows:

Direct equivalents

Transfer courses which are equal to a specific EWU course are called direct equivalents.

Example: SCC ENGL 271 [World Literature to 1650] = GNML 212 at EWU. 

EWU pseudo courses

Example: SFCC ENGL 209 [British Literature since 1800] = GECR LH1 at EWU. This course meets the GECR Humanities List 1: Literature requirement, but does not have a direct equivalent. 

Elective credits

Transfer courses accepted as transferable to EWU. Elective credits will apply to the overall required credits required to graduate and are not equal to a specific course or requirement.

Elective credits are designated as the EWU Pseudo courses: UNIV LEL (lower-division elective) or UNIV UEL (upper-division elective).

Example: SFCC ENGL 261 [20th Century Novel] = UNIV LEL at EWU.

Non-credit courses

These courses are non-transferable and may not be used for credit at EWU. Courses that typically transfer as non-credit are: pre-college coursework and restricted (non-academic) coursework.

Non-credit Courses are given the EWU Pseudo course: UNIV NON.

Examples: SCC ENGL 051 [Basic Reading Skills] = UNIV NON ; SCC COS 101 [Intro to Cosmetology] = UNIV NON.

Tips for getting the most out of your transfer coursework:

• Have you submitted your final official transcripts from all of the colleges and universities you attended? Do your final transcripts include any degrees you received? If not, make sure to have those transcripts submitted to the EWU Admissions Office as soon as possible.
• Check carefully through your Transfer Evaluation: the *TRAN INST audit in SOAR. See How to Request a Selected Program above. Did all of your courses transfer to EWU as expected? Make sure to keep in mind the following General Transfer Credit Information:
  • To transfer, courses must be college level (no pre-college-level courses, including Math and English, can be accepted).
  • Courses must be from an academic subject area. Courses from non-academic subject areas, including courses like Auto Mechanics, Culinary Arts, EMT, Hotel Management, Nursing Aid and Paralegal are restricted and cannot be transferred to EWU.
  • Generally, courses must be at least 4 quarter hours or 3 semester hours to transfer to fulfill a general education or graduation requirement. Courses accepted as elective credit do not require a minimum number of credits.
  • Courses must match the intent of the same requirement here at EWU (Admissions evaluators compare the course content of your transfer course to EWU's requirement).
• If you find a course that meets the above requirements that you feel should have transferred to EWU, check with your academic advisor or departmental advisor at your next advising appointment OR check with the Admissions Office directly. You may be required to submit additional information about the course, perhaps a more detailed course description from the college, or a syllabus from the course.

Transfer courses versus transfer credits:

EWU accepts a maximum of 90 lower-division credits (100 and 200 level). No more than 135 credits (lower- and upper-division credits combined) may be accepted in transfer for a bachelor's degree.

It is important to understand that even though all of your CREDITS may not have transferred to EWU-- all of your COURSES have been transferred to waive EWU university requirements, where applicable. For example, a student transferring to EWU with 105 college-level credits from SFCC with coursework which waives all of his/her general education requirements at EWU: only the 90 credits maximum would transfer but all of his/her coursework would still waive all of the general requirements at EWU.

Students with Direct Transfer Agreement Degrees (DTAs):

Students who transfer with an approved DTA will receive automatic junior standing and the following requirements are satisfied:

• Pre-University Skills: CPLA 100, ENGL 100, MATH 100-104
• Competencies & Proficiencies: CPLA 101; ENGL 101, 201; MATH proficiency (college-level math for graduation).
• General Education Core Requirements (GECR)--8 requirements in 3 breadth areas:
  
  • Humanities
  • Social Sciences
  • Natural Sciences

A list of approved Direct Transfer Agreement Degrees (listed by community college) can be found here.

**Please note that some majors may require courses in addition to requirements waived by the DTA. Consult your departmental advisor for additional information.**

Students with Bachelor's Degrees:

Students who transfer with an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution will receive automatic post-bachelor's degree standing and the following requirements are satisfied:

• Pre-University Skills: CPLA 100, ENGL 100, MATH 100-104.
• Competencies & Proficiencies: CPLA 101; ENGL 101, 201; MATH proficiency (college-level math for graduation).
• General Education Core Requirements (GECR)--8 requirements in 3 breadth areas:
  
  • Humanities,
  • Social Sciences
  • Natural Sciences
• University Graduation Requirements:
  
  • Culture and Gender Diversity
  • International Studies
  • Foreign Language
  • Senior Capstone--ITGS400 (department specific capstone courses may still be required)
