ENGL, MATH & CPLA Placement
English composition placement
Most students will place into English Composition at EWU with their ACT or SAT scores.Advanced Placement (AP) scores of 3 or higher in English Literature and Composition or AP English Language and Composition will also determine English Composition Placement. See Sources of Credit in the current EWU Catalog.
Transfer students may place into English Composition at EWU with coursework from their previous college(s). Students should consult their SOAR Audit and their academic or departmental advisor. Visit SOAR for Students for instructions for requesting your SOAR Audit.
Non-traditional students (25 years and older) without SAT, ACT, AP tests or transfer credit should contact the English Department regarding English Composition Placement Testing.
Mathematics placement
Most students will place into mathematics at EWU by taking the APTP Math Placement Test. Check the EWU APTP Math Placement Test website for test dates, practice test and instructions.
Students with Advanced Placement (AP) scores of 3 or higher in Calculus AB, Calculus BC or Statistics AP will place in mathematics. See Sources of Credit in the current EWU Catalog.

Transfer students with an approved direct transfer associate degree have met the mathematics competency and proficiency requirements for EWU, but may need to complete additional mathematics requirements for their major. See a list of institutions and degrees that fulfill the Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) guidelines (degrees listed by community college) and specific major requirements in the current EWU Catalog.
Computer literacy
All students must achieve Computer Literacy clearance at EWU to earn a baccalaureate degree. Computer Literacy competency is demonstrated by successful completion of one of the following:
- Both of the CPLA Level I and II challenge examinations. Visit the Computer Literacy Program website for test dates and information on the challenge tests.
- Completion of CPLA 100, Computer Literacy 1 (1 credit) with a "P" grade and CPLA 101, Computer Literacy II (1 credit) with a grade of at least 2.0 [CPLA 100 does not count towards earned credit]
- Completion of CPLA 120 (5 credits) with a grade of at least 2.0
- All incoming students without a direct transfer associate degree (DTA) or a previous bachelor's degree.
- All Education majors, even those with a direct transfer associate degree (DTA).
- All students in programs requiring CPLA 100, 101 or 120, including students with a direct transfer associate degree (DTA).
- All students with course requirements having CPLA 100, 101 or CPLA 120, including students with a direct transfer associate degree (DTA).
