Understanding Academic Probation, Dismissal & Reinstatement

Academic warning/probation vs. financial aid probation/suspension

Academic Warning and Academic Probation

Any student who doesn't earn the 2.0 cumulative GPA required for good academic standing is placed on Academic Warning (first-time EWU students) or Academic Probation (continuing students). GUAA notifies students of their academic standing via official EWU email. The notification includes the Academic Probation, Reinstatement and Dismissal policy and explains that an academic probation registration hold has been placed on their student record which requires them to meet with their academic or departmental advisor as soon as possible.

Financial aid warning/probation/suspension

Students who do not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress for financial aid (minimum credits as determined by financial aid) can be placed on financial aid warning, probation or suspension. It is very important that students carefully read the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy and contact the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office directly with questions or concerns.

Continuing EWU students vs. first-time EWU students

First-time EWU students

Any first quarter student at EWU (either freshman or transfer student) who earns less than 2.0 GPA in their very first quarter at EWU is placed on Academic Warning. Students on Academic Warning who do no earn a 2.0 cumulative at the end of the next quarter (regardless of whether or not they earn a 2.0 for the quarter) are progressed to Academic Probation. As a student on Academic Probation, they are at risk for academic dismissal. The student must earn 2.0 GPA for the quarter (and each subsequent quarter that they remain on probation) to remain eligible to stay at EWU. If a student earns a cumulative of a 2.0, they are automatically removed from Academic Warning or Academic Probation.

Continuing EWU students

Continuing EWU students are subject to dismissal after one quarter on Academic Probation. To remain eligible to stay at EWU, continuing students on probation must earn at least a 2.0 GPA each quarter they are on probation. Students who don't earn a 2.0 each quarter while on probation will be academically dismissed. When the student brings their cumulative GPA up to 2.0, they are automatically removed from Academic Probation. When the student earns a 2.0 cumulative GPA, they will be automatically removed from Academic Probation.

Students on Academic Warning and Academic Probation will have an academic probation registration hold placed on their account each quarter they are on probation, which requires to meet with their academic advisor each quarter to discuss their academic standing.

Example new Fall 2014 freshman:

Fall 2014 Winter 2015 Spring 2015
First Quarter Student

PSYC100     0.0     5 ART213       1.0     5 PHIL211     4.0     5

Academic Warning
Academic Probation
Academic Probation 2

The student is placed on
Academic Warning
because his/her
cumulative GPA is below
2.0 after first quarter grades.

The student is allowed to
enroll for the following quarter
regardless of quarterly GPA.

However, the Student is now a
continuing student, and
progresses to Academic
Probation
, which means
he/she is at risk for Academic
Dismissal the very next quarter
.

This quarter the student is At
Risk For Dismissal
.

In this case, the student would
be allowed to enroll for the
following quarter because he/she
earned over a 2.0 for the quarter.

The student does remain on
Academic Probation because the
cumulative GPA is still below 2.0.

Academic Dismissal
As a continuing student,
the student is At Risk For

In this case, the student
has been Academically
Dismissed because he/she
did not earn a 2.0 GPA for
the quarter
.

Academic dismissal

First academic dismissal

The first time a student is academically dismissed, he/she must sit out one academic quarter (Fall, Winter, or Spring) before being eligible to petition for academic reinstatement.

Second academic dismissal

Students dismissed a second time must sit out one full calendar year (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer) before being eligible to petition for academic reinstatement.

Petitioning for academic reinstatement

Undeclared and declared students petition for academic reinstatement through GUAA by the posted deadline. For students who are declared in a major, GUAA will coordinate the reinstatement proceedings with the college Dean's Office. The Petition for Academic Reinstatement form and instructions are available on the Petition for Academic Reinstatement website.
