Human Subject Compliance
Research projects that use people as subjects must be reviewed by Eastern Washington University's Institutional Review Board. Please read the university's policy on human subjects.
Please turn in your application to the Grants Office in Showalter 210. If your application requires full review (not all applications do) the application submission deadline is 10 working days before the full review meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Sarah Keller, the chair of the IRB, at 359-7039, or Ruth Galm at 359-6567.
Training
On-line training for both biomedical and social and behavioral science human subjects research is available for EWU Institutional Review Board members and researchers through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) at the University of Miami. The training includes mandatory modules for IRB members and modules on specific topics including, but not limited to, informed consent, records based research, research with special populations, and cultural competency in research. Please check with Ruth Galm, Human Protections Administrator, or with your faculty advisor regarding department or institutional requirements for training on human subjects in research. All personnel conducting federally supported research involving human subjects are required to complete the training offered through CITI.

Assurance for Projects for which IRB is NOT REQUIRED
Under certain conditions classroom research projects and quality improvement/quality assurance (QI/QA) projects undertaken by EWU faculty, staff, and students do not require review and approval by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for Human Subjects Research. To conduct a project without an IRB review, all of the conditions identified for the type of project to be undertaken must be met. To assure that a project is not subject to IRB review and approval, an Assurance Form must be completed and signed by the person responsible for the project and submitted to the Office of Grant & Research Development (OGRD), Showalter Hall 210, prior to conducting the project.
Submit an original and one copy. You can download the form in pdf or Word format below.
